For the Love of Pencil Skirts

The first time I wore a pencil skirt was my senior year of high school when I was in the musical "The Pajama Game". I was cast as a middle-aged secretary named Mabel. In the plays I participated in I was frequently cast as a old woman. That was okay with me because it meant I never had to endure the awkwardness of kissing peers on stage, which many of my friends who were cast as romantic roles experienced!

When I sang and danced as Mabel, my hair was sprayed grey and I had drawn on wrinkles. I wore a button up blouse fastened with a brooch and a long, blue pencil skirt. Although this obviously wasn't my best look, it helped me discovered the pencil skirt and how flattering, ladylike, and timeless it is.

Today I want to share with you two classy pencil skirt looks!

I paired this cobalt blue pencil skirt with a short sleeve knit blouse and some peep toe flats.

This was definitely a bargain outfit! The skirt and shoes are from Marshalls and the blouse was a thrift store find. I have had these shoes for about 8 years (even before I was cast as Mabel!), I just love them and they have held up well!

A deep side part with a twist pulled into a ponytail compliments a classic look. I accessorized with simple hoop earrings and a sweet necklace.

I bought this darling white pencil skirt with a lace overlay on the front panel last Spring. I was a bride-to-be, and I bought LOTS of white things that season! Luckily, most of them are still wearable without looking too bride-y.

I loosely tucked in a three quarter sleeve peach sweater to my white skirt. I can't for the life of me remember the brand name, but it's usually sold at Nordstrom BP and I found it at Plato's Closet (score!). The skirt is Worthington from JC Penney. I LOVE these wedges from Payless ShoeSource and have been wearing them with everything. They're really comfortable too.

Loose curls and a pearl necklace complete the look.

Ok, now that I'm thinking about it, the first outfit really reminds me of my Mabel costume. I can't find a throwback picture, but I think I'm ok with that ;)

What's your favorite way to style a pencil skirt? I would love to hear from you.

    1. Thanks Candace! Being an old lady was fun, and while I wished I was the exciting, romantic role sometimes, I think being an old lady fits my heart pretty well :)
